May 2022 second newsletter

Hello, Rebel

We hope you like this slightly ‘new look’ email, which is now being sent out via Action Network. Most of the rest of XR use Action Network, so we have migrated our subscriber base to that platform from Mailchimp. This means that all your subscriptions to newsletters from XR can be seen in one place. Action Network also has other benefits which will allow XR Exeter to communicate better.

If you were not on the Exeter Mailchimp subscriber list, receiving our newsletter in the past, then you probably signed up on Extinction Rebellion UK’s website, in which case: welcome to the newsletter from your local XR group.

This newsletter is a work in progress as we adjust to the new platform, we welcome comments (to send comments – reply to this email). It will continue to go out to you twice a month with news of meetings, events and actions, as well as items of broader interest and relevance.

Thank you to Chris for his hard work managing the migration. As always, visit the Facebook page or the website for the latest updates between times.

McSit-in Saturday 28 May

Meet on Cathedral Green at 11am for briefing. The idea of the action is two-fold:

  • to take up space inside the McDonalds outlet, disrupting their ability to continue business as usual;
  • to get some articles in local media to announce the new Exeter Animal Rebellion group & to generate conversation around the impact of industrial meat & dairy on the climate crisis.

The demand is for McDonalds to go plant-based.

Once everyone is inside we’ll get out our tablecloths, our plant-based packed lunches, bunches of flowers for the tables, patches on our backs (‘Meat & Dairy = Climate Crisis; McDonald’s Go Plant-Based!’) and a banner. Leaflets won’t be handed out inside the restaurant, but they are there if customers are interested. There will be samba on the pavement outside after an hour, with one or two people outside holding up leaflets and chatting to passers-by.

Callout for Doorknockers and Pink Tablers

One of the most crucial things we have to do is to enable more people to join the rebellion.

We believe that if 3.5% of the population join us then we might have a chance of winning.

That is why XR is prioritising outreach and Mobilisation.

In Exeter we are focusing on the daily Pink Table stall in the High Street, and on Doorknocking.

Pink Table:

We are finding that many people are coming up to our table and wanting to talk to us because they are worried about the future.

We are looking for rebels to be on the stall for just 2 hours on a regular basis, weekly/fortnightly, you choose.

If you would like to join us on the Pink Table please put your name down on the Rota here…

Doorknocking:

Or you might prefer to do some doorknocking.

It’s not as scary as it sounds:

We have a survey which makes it easier for you to guide the conversation, and for the first half hour or so you can shadow someone else who has done it before.

If you think this might be your thing then put your name down on the Schedule here…

Don’t be a bystander.  The stakes are too high.

General Meeting

The next general meeting is 7pm 19th May at Headway with the 6:15 welcome meeting preceding it.
