Devon County Council & Fossil Fuels

This action was preceded by protesters camping out for the previous 2 nights at County Hall. Devon County Council did pass a motion to divest from direct investment in fossil fuels but the devil is in the detail and we await an analysis of what this will actually achieve and if it is enough.

Citizens of Devon, youth climate strikers, pension-holders, students, families, – joined us on a beautiful march and creative rally through Exeter city centre (starting Bedford Square, Princesshay at 10am) to Devon County Hall to call on our council to Stop Funding Fossil Fuels NOW!

In February 2019 Devon County Council declared a Climate Emergency yet more than 2 years-on the Devon Pension Fund managed by DCC still has investments of over £100million in fossil fuels! Whilst the International Energy Agency has stated that all new fossil fuel exploration must halt THIS YEAR, part of OUR council tax is still going towards fossil fuel exploration led by Shell, BP and ExxonMobil. “There is no time for delay and no room for excuses” UN Secretary General António Guterres. We are on the road to climate collapse – we have to change track immediately.

On 17th September the Pension and Investment Fund Committee will be sitting at County Hall – and we will be there to demand Devon County Council Divest Devon NOW! There is no time to waste. This is the beginning of an escalating campaign to put pressure on our council to stop funding fossil fuels immediately. Expect music, speeches, print-making, a giant picnic (bring your own lunch), a People’s Assembly and some theatrical actions!
